Introducing Altec Lansing’s first Alexa enabled hands-free voice activated speaker. The Altec Lansing VersA™ speaker will play your favorite playlist, check the weather for the day and even order a pizza! Built-in far-field voice technology VersA™ picks up on commands in the loudest of rooms and from across the room. With Amazon Alexa Technology, this speaker will sync with your apps and smart devices to provide freedom to do what you want, when you want. Built with portability in mind – featuring Wifi and Bluetooth functionality to bring your VersA™ speaker wherever you go. Never fret the elements as the VersA™ is IP67 rated waterproof, snowproof and dirtproof.
You can connect your VersA to a Wi-Fi network via the VersA Bridge app, which can be found in the Google Play and Apple iTunes stores. Once you have downloaded and installed the app, follow the directions given in the app to connect your VersA to your wireless network. Please note that the VersA speaker will ONLY connect to a 2.4GHz network, so be sure that your phone is not connected to a 5GHz network when you begin the setup process. Also note that public networks, especially those that require an authentication process beyond a password, may not work consistently with the VersA.
The VersA is in Wi-Fi mode by default once it is powered-on. To switch to Bluetooth mode, tap the Bluetooth button on the side of the speaker. If it is your first time connecting the speaker to a Bluetooth source, it will automatically enter pairing mode. Go to the Bluetooth settings menu on your phone, tablet or computer and select “VersA speaker” from the menu. The devices will now be paired.
No, only one connection can be active at a time. If you are in Bluetooth Mode, you will not have access to the Alexa voice assistant until you return to Wi-Fi mode.
If the device is already connected to a Wi-Fi Network, you simply tap the Bluetooth button on the side of the speaker to switch to Bluetooth mode. If it is your first time setting up a Bluetooth connection on your VersA, the speaker will automatically enter pairing mode. You can pair the speaker to your phone via the phone’s Bluetooth settings menu. If you would like to switch back to Wi-Fi mode, press the Bluetooth Button again.
Make sure that the Wi-Fi network you are connected to is putting out a 2.4 GHz signal, not a 5 GHz signal. The VersA speaker is unable to receive a 5GHz signal. Most 5 GHz networks have “_5G” at the end of the name (i.e. Home_Network_5G).
No, you do not need an Amazon Prime membership to use Alexa, but you may not be able to access certain features, like Amazon Prime Music and Alexa-exclusive Amazon discounts.
To reset the VersA Speaker, hold down the volume up and volume down (plus and minus) buttons on the top of the device for 5-7 seconds until you hear “restoring to factory settings”. This will perform a device reset, clearing your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections from the device. This will not reset the device firmware.
The Bluetooth button will be illuminated white or blue when the device is on. When plugged-in, the power button will be illuminated orange regardless of whether the device is on or off.
Updates will usually come “over the air” and happen automatically. To update the firmware manually, first open the “VersA Bridge” app on your phone. If your VersA and your phone are connected to the same 2.4GHz wireless network, your speaker will be listed in the menu in the app. Click on your speaker’s name to see information about the device, including firmware version and MAC address. At the bottom the screen, you will see options to “Update Bluetooth” and “Update Firmware.”
Click on “Update Bluetooth” to check for an update. If an update is needed, your VersA will begin downloading the latest Bluetooth firmware version. When it is done downloading, the device will shut off. You will need to power the device back on manually.
Once the device is restarted, find it again in the VersA Bridge app. This time, click on “Update Firmware.” The speaker will begin downloading the latest Firmware version is an update is available. During this time do not manually power your VersA. Once the update is complete, the device will restart on its own, running the latest firmware version.
No, once the speaker is setup and connected to Wi-Fi, it can operate independently.
The effective range for VersA’s microphone is 6-9 ft. If there is a lot of ambient noise (other people talking, television on, appliances running, etc…) you may need to get closer for Alexa to understand.
Yes, using the settings menu in your Amazon Alexa App you can set a default music service.
To change which service Alexa will use by default, go to the settings menu, and under “Accounts,” click on “Music & Media.” From there, click on “Choose Default Music Services.” Please note that Spotify and Pandora are currently not compatible with Alexa on the VersA speaker.
Spotify and Pandora streaming via Alexa is currently not supported on third party speakers like the VersA. This functionality will be available later with an OTA update.
Yes, if you would like Alexa to play an audiobook, you will need to set up an Audible account. Alexa also has text to voice capabilities and can read certain Kindle books aloud. You can check for book compatibility via the Alexa app.
You do not need Amazon Prime to listen to music via Bluetooth. You do need Amazon prime to access Prime Music via Alexa. Prime Music is included with Amazon Prime and offers millions of songs for free. Amazon Music Unlimited can be added to your Amazon account for an additional monthly fee and gives you access to more songs.
Various smart home products, from light bulbs to sprinkler systems, can be controlled with Alexa. Products from Wemo, Phillips Hue and Sonos support Alexa integration. To see a full list of compatible products, visit https://www.amazon.com/alexasmarthome.
You can setup smart home products via the Amazon Alexa app using Alexa Skills in accordance with the instructions provided with your smart home device. For more information, click here.
You can teach skills to Alexa via the Amazon Alexa app on your phone. Under the skills tab, you can browse for new skills and activate them. See the app for more information or click here. Please note that certain skills are currently not compatible with third-party speakers like the VersA. More skills will become compatible with future updates.
Yes, but content (music, audiobooks, etc…) will only play from one VersA device at a time.
Location can be changed in the Amazon Alexa app. Open the app, access the settings menu, and under devices, select your VersA speaker. Under the “general” section, you will see “Device location.” Select “Edit” under “Device location” and input your address. Your VersA will now give weather, traffic and other updates relative to that location.
If your VersA speaker is connected to Wi-Fi (you can check in the VersA Bridge app), but says you are not signed-in to Amazon, your account was likely disconnected. If the device was recently updated, there is a chance your Amazon account desynced from your VersA.
To fix this issue, make sure your phone and VersA speaker are connected to the same Wi-Fi, then go into the VersA Bridge app on your phone. From the VersA Bridge App, select your speaker. Once you’ve selected your VersA speaker, you will see an option to sign into Amazon Alexa. Select that option and follow the on-screen prompts. Your Alexa assistant will now be synced with your VersA speaker.
You likely need to change your location settings in the Amazon Alexa app. To change your location and time zone, open the Amazon Alexa app, click on menu, then settings and then click on your VersA Speaker in the menu presented on screen. Under “Device Location,” click “Edit,” and you will be able to change/edit your location.
Say the wake word, “Alexa,” and then “stop.”
